FAQ’S WEINIG GRINDING SERVICE
Q. What services does the WEINIG GRINDING SERVICE offer?
A. We offer technical support on the best method to run your profiles,
precision ground profile knives, and templates customized to your
requirements, all done by trained Weinig technicians experienced
in the operation of both moulders & grinders.
Q. I already own a profile grinder. Why should I consider using the
WEINIG GRINDING SERVICE?
A. We can offer you assistance during personnel shortages, seasonal
work overloads, or special applications such as carbide knives or difficult-to-run
profiles. Also, we now offer pre-hogged knives which saves wear and
tear on your grinder since we do over 95% of the steel removal.
Q. What is the turn-around time for finished, pre-hogged and reground
knives?
A. Our standard turn-around time for regrinds and pre-hogged is usually
same day or next day shipping. On finished knives we work on a standard
maximum three-day lead-time to ship. If you have urgent tooling needs,
we will do all we can to be accommodating.
Q. Is it better to send a fax, drawing or sample?
A. We can work with any of these. However, the more accurate the information
you give us, the more accurate the end product. Faxes can distort
the original image and wood samples can be dimensionally different
from when they were first run. Accurate drawings are always the best
form of communication, and we will always produce a dimensioned drawing
for your approval before we start production.
Q. How is the cost calculated?
A. The cost of custom knives is calculated on a price per lineal inch,
and depending on the size and shape of the profile you require and
the type of steel to be used. Our specialists can help you with price
quotes on all your profile needs. You can also refer to the price
chart in the Weinig Tooling & Supplies catalog or online at www.weinigusa.com.
Q. What does “depth of cut“ mean?
A. “Depth of Cut” is the measurement from the surface of
the profile to the deepest part of the profile. This measurement, plus
the type of steel being used, determines the price of the knives required.
Q. What would be the best way to run this profile?
A. Our recommendations are based according to your machine configuration
and Weinig technical experience. We would also recommend the best
way to achieve the most support from your molder’s pressure
shoe, fence and side pressure elements, in order to provide the best
product finish.
Q. What kind of lineal foot run can I expect to get from different
grades of knife steel?
A. There are many variables that will determine the length of run you
can expect to receive from a specific type of tooling. Our Grinding
Service Department will work with you to match your moulder, material
and length of run to the correct tooling.
Q. What type of knife steel is best for my application?
A. The knife steel would be determined by the type of material being
run, the length of the run, and how often you run that profile .
For example, we might recommend SRS economy grade steel for a 1000
LF poplar run; SUPRE or Carbide for moulding hard maple or teak;
M3+ for a 5000 LF pine run, or Double Back Carbide for an MDF run.
Q. What does “rough only” mean?
A. Rough only refers to our PRE-HOGGED PROFILE KNIVES. When you purchase
pre-hogged knives, we do the majority of stock removal for you leaving
only a quick rough and finish grind and final balance to complete
your profile knife. This service has the potential to save you a
large amount of time and money, allowing quicker turn around and
increased production from your tool room.
Q. What is the proper cutterhead hook angle for the material that
I am running?
A. Our experience is that cutterheads with a 20° cutting angle
should be used for the majority of wood species machined in North America.
However, you may sometimes experience tearout on some species that
will require a different hook angle. In these cases, we can apply Weinig
technical experience to provide alternate recommendations.
Q. Do you have copies of profiles from national or regional organizations
and associations?
A. We currently have available the 3rd Edition of the Weinig Profile
Catalog which contains over 1700 drawings, many of which match profiles
from most North American organizations and associations.
Q. What are the types of electronic files that the Grinding Service
Department uses?
A. We are able to import a large number of file formats, but the file
formats most often used are dxf, dwg, tcw, prt, pdf and jpg.
